Women Literacy Program

Last year, the program has developed 13 centers in the cities of Kathmandu and Patan (Lalitpur), and was conducted by a group of 12 trainers. The 320 participants admitted to the program were totally illiterate women aged 18 to 60 years, and status of various jobs, including working in domestic services had, in small workshops carpets and housewives.

The training program includes a first degree which lasts seven months with 350 hours, and a second advanced level, for three months with 150 hours of classes. The full course lasts ten months, with daily classes of two hours, six days a week, from Sunday to Friday.

At end of year graduation ceremonies held in each of the cores where classes were taught in those given a diploma that certifies training in reading, writing and numeracy. In these ceremonies also involved teachers and program coordinators, and representatives of Mitra Kunj Nepal, the counterpart organization of Friends of Nepal, acting as executor of the project.

At the end of the course, participants who have completed, are able to read and write in Nepali language, and to perform arithmetic operations such as add, subtract, multiply, divide, simple calculations%, prepare bills and take a small daily accounting of income and expenses.

In the literacy courses are treated well, issues of general interest to women in Nepal, including the problem of trafficking of women, gender, legal status of women, child labor and family participation in the development, pollution and environment and tradition and superstition, among others. Also exposed issues of special interest to their daily lives, such as aspects of health, nutrition, family planning, reproductive health, sexually transmitted diseases like HIV / AIDS, as well as financial aspects, such as savings and credit cooperatives and Also tips for generating financial resources.
